The Belgian Sheepdog, also known as the Groenendael, is a Belgium breed that was bred for guarding sheep herds. They typically grow to be between 22 and 26 inches tall, and they usually weigh around 62 pounds. Their coat is long and thick, and it has a dense undercoat used to protect it from cold weather. Black is the stereotypical coat color for this breed, however, it can also be found in black and white variations.

The temperament of this dog makes it more suitable for families with older children or households without children. This is because the normal chasing games played by kids can trigger the protective instincts of this dog and lead to unpleasant mishaps. They also should be the
only pet in the household. If your Belgian Sheepdog has a extra-friendly personality then you may be able to socialize them enough that they will accept another pet.

To care for this breed you will need to brush their coat each day. You will also want to look for matting and tangles. These will need to be removed as soon as possible to prevent skin problems and further matting. This is a working breed so they will need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Early obedience training and consistency are also needed with this breed. This breed has several health issues that you will need to keep your eyes open for including: hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and eye problems.

This is a high energy breed and will be best suitable for a family who is active and able to mentally and physically exhaust their pet.
