This is a labrador retriever that is being trained as a service dog for a young girl.
One of her tasks is to find the girl when she runs away.
We’re at the beginning of teaching this skill. The dog may not even be using her nose very much at this point.
But as she progresses we’ll make the searches more difficult and that will lead to the dog using her nose more in addition to her eyes and ears.
We train the dog ‘in drive’. In other words we get the dog amped up. We need to access a great deal of excitement and fun to be able to potentially maintain a track that could go for hundreds of yards. If it isn’t fun, the dog won’t have the work ethic to see it through.
