The Black Russian Terrier is a Russian breed that is known for its need to be close to humans. This is a large dog breed. The males will usually stand between 27 and 29 inches tall and weigh between 100 and 140 pounds. The female are a little bit smaller. They usually stand between 26 and 28 inches and weigh between 85 and 140 pounds. Their coat is long, dense, weatherproof, bristly, wavy and black. Their characteristic bangs in the face and beard make them a cute dog to look at.

The Black Russian Terrier is known for its eagerness to please its human companions. They are capable of doing just about any dog work you can image. They are great hunting dogs, protectors, herder, family pets, and companions. They enjoy children and other family pets, however, they do not always get along with non-household animals.

To care for this breed you will need to brush their coat weekly. This breed does not shed a lot so you may need to help them get rid of dead hair in order to prevent matting. Their coat should be trimmed about every 6 to 8 weeks. You will also need a lot of exercise. Try taking them for a long walk or jog, or take them to the local river or pond for a dip. The only health problems that seem to plague this breed are elbow and hip problems.

The Black Russian Terrier’s history is very mysterious and intriguing. Following World War II, the Soviets wanted to reintroduce the breed to the public. The Red Star Kennel, the state-operated organization chartered to breed working dogs for the armed services, actively developed a new breed which became the modern day Black Russian Terrier.

Though the first Black Russian Terrier was not exactly the same as today’s, Red Star successfully produced large, physically powerful, unpretentious dogs that didn’t require extensive coat care. These dogs exhibited train-ability for commands and jobs as well as the proper amount of aggression needed to serve the Soviet Union Army’s soldiers.

Black Russian Terriers are a rare, beautiful, and very intelligent dogs. They are dogs of middle to large size, powerful, of firm-rough constitution type, with rich bones, trim, black coat, beautiful wide movement, stable mind and character. They are in the working group.

The Black Russian Terrier is a robust, large and very powerful dog. The dog has large bones and well developed muscles. They range in size from 26 inches to 30 inches, although some can be a little larger and weigh between 80 and 130 pounds on average.

A Black Russian Terriers should move freely with a smooth easy springy motion. The motion should be well balanced and fluid. As the Black Russian Terrier moves faster the feet will converge toward a centerline. The top line should remain level.

The Black Russian Terrier, because of its breeding as a working dog, has a very strong “work ethic”, and needs a job to do in order to be happy. Early training is a must, as it will exploit any owner who has failed to establish clear dominance, and they just get too big to not be trained properly.

They are very responsive to firm, consistent training, and excel in obedience competitions. They also perform well in other dog sports, such as Agility competitions, and Schutzhund training. The Black Russian Terrier needs lots of exercise, and may become hyperactive and destructive if it doesn’t have a chance to burn off its energy.

As this dog molts slightly, it is essential that it receives regular grooming. At the minimum, the Black Russian Terrier requires brushing three times a week with a slicker brush to keep the coat mat-free. Comb thoroughly with wide-toothed comb. Regular trimming is also needed.

The Black Russian Terrier adores being around people. Socialization will be a positive step toward training your dog because they love being around people, and they enjoy the companionship that comes with training. Highly intelligent, owners find enjoyment in training their Black Russian Terrier.

Black Russian Terriers are always ready for a long daily walks. They love to romp, play and to be entertained especially in large fields, snowy mountains and any kind of water.

At home, they are calm and they don’t run around restlessly and they are usually only active outdoors. This breed is also very loving and tender with his human family, especially the children of the house.
