The Samoyed, also called the Samayedskaya, is a Russian working breed. These dogs were originally used as herding dogs and guard dogs for reindeer herds. Today they still a very active working dog taking on responsibilities for herding, pulling sleds, guarding homes, and caring for their human families.
The Samoyed is a medium sized dog that stands between 18 and 22 inches tall and weighs between 50 and 60 pounds. They have a medium to long overcoat that is harsh and straight and a soft downy undercoat. This dog is mainly found in shades of white and cream.
This dog can be somewhat deceptive. They have a very cute exterior but can be a strong protector of the home. Make sure to start training at a young age to avoid adult dog problems.
The Samoyed is an ancient breed. They is primitive as a breed can get. They has no remaining trace of wolf or fox in its genes. The Samoyed tribe of Siberia developed this breed for sledding, herding, guarding and keeping their owners warm. The breed was cherished by these people and they even allowed them to sleep in their tents because they depended on the dogs for their survival.
An explorer names Robert Scott brought several of these dogs to England and today it is one of the most fashionable show and companion breeds. It also has the abilities of a working breed.
Appearance and Abilities of the Samoyed
The Samoyed has a compact and muscular body. This is a hard-working breed and their strength and endurance are their major physical attributes. They have solid and muscular legs; their feet are flat and covered with hair.
They has a thick coat that comes in white, biscuit, yellow and cream colors. The coat is sometimes silvery tipped. The thickness of their coat is distinct. It is harsh and should not be wavy. The Samoyed appears fluffy with their dense, double-layered coat. They also have a thick but soft undercoat which protects it against the cold weather.
The Samoyed is a dynamic, strong, and hardy dog. They has strong jaws and they are known for their black mouth that curls slightly at the corners into a smile. The Samoyed’s tail is also one of its distinct features. It is long, full-haired and carried rolled on the back.
Samoyed Temperament and Tendencies
The Samoyed is bright and alert. A hardy and eager worker, they like to stay busy and enjoy any activity that is physically stimulating.
They are a gentle breed with peaceable and dignified manners. They are very devoted to their master. They may favor one person but they are welcoming to everyone. They are easy-going and quite playful. They are naturally passive and friendly to all, including strangers. They willingly adapt to family life and get along well with children.
Samoyeds are loyal creatures and they enjoy being with their families. Even with their affable nature, Samoyeds can still function as a guard dog because they will alert you to the presence of suspicious strangers.
Training and Care for the Samoyed
Samoyeds are extremely intelligent breeds. They will respond to firm and patient training and training should start at an early age. Consistency is the key and owners should always take the role of a pack leader. Being meek and passive will result in behavior issues such as, but not limited to, obsessive barking.
Due to their working heritage, Samoyeds may chase things, run and bark, so it’s best to channel that energy into some kind of job or activity. Otherwise, these independent thinkers may invent ways to keep themselves entertained. At the very least, daily exercise is necessary.
The Samoyed coat can also mat and needs to be brushed weekly, more often during shedding season. Extensive grooming is needed. They are seasonally heavy shedders. The fluffy double coat needs frequent brushing, but tends to stay white without bathing.
